Research - music videos/inspiration/ideas

these are some of the videos we looked at whilst planning for our video to see what aspects of these videos would work in our storyline.

the actual video for the artist we were using features a lot of special effects editing which we wanted to use in our video but applying the depressed sad look of the streets video.

Mid Production

we are about 3/4 of the way through the whole production of our music video. we now just have a few minor editing features to do. we are currently trying to cross fade two frames to blur out one of the characters in a shot, however this is proving difficult because of how we filmed the shot. we have the two frames, however the angle changes on the two shots are in two different places which means we may have to re-film the two shots to make sure they're exactly the same frame.

27th November Editing

After having to deal with filming constraints, we have finally got some of the footage and we are now editing the film against the music. we have about a minute's worth of of filming and james is editing what we have with the music. This puts us at an advantage because we know exactly how much footage we need and what we need.
the filming has not been done in chronological order due to location changes and having to deal with weather changes. this means we have filmed only parts of the film so we cannot edit too much because we don't yet know what the final piece will look like. hopefully the weather differences will not interfere too much as it has been with the rest of the filming.

Filming setbacks

during the filming for our music video, James and I encountered a number of problems, the main problem being the weather. We needed certain conditions to film the scenes in order for the editing to look it's best. Because of issues with the weather, this may hinder the editing slightly as some of the special effects we wanted to use will be difficult to incorporate.

However, to resolve this problem we have decided to split our filming, so we are going to film some in the rain to represent a change in the time, for example all of the scenes where it is raining will be in the present and all of the 'flashbacks' will be in the conditions we wanted initially (clear weather). There is also a third element which is the scenes with the band; this will also have to be filmed in good weather conditions so we can use adobe after effects to add in the special effects during scenes when the band is playing.

These bad weather conditions have set us back two weeks which means we now have less time to edit the final piece, but hopefully if we can complete all of the filming within the next week we have three weeks left to finish the video off and add the music to the piece.

Film Classification

Film Classification

Our finished music video will contain no explicit or offensive material, the film will be rated universal (U) which means it can be viewed by anyone.

The subject of the video does however aim at a slightly older audience, perhaps 18-30. Most music videos do not contain explicit material unless aiming at a niche audience and I think if we are to get the audience we want, this means making the video completely straight so it can be enjoyed by all.

Feeder, whose music we are using for the video, aim for a similar type of audience to what we’re aiming for. We thought if we are going to make a video to their music we should look at previous work. A lot of their other videos can be viewed by all audiences, there’s no inappropriate material, just a simple video shoot with lots of effects to spruce it up.

Although I believe our video could be rated U I don’t want content in the video that will appeal to younger children as It would be going in the completely wrong direction of how we want the song and video as a whole to come across.

I think if we had an excuse or something in the video to make it worth a PG it would aim more at the proposed audience.

Special Effects Planning

Now that we have the initial idea and storyboard to the video complete, we need to look into what other videos are using in terms of special effects.

our video is going to make use of a lot of CGI effects. Throughout the video we want to use screening which will involve keeping the light even in each shot, giving it a much more professional look and cleaner finish. We will be shooting the video with an HD ready camera, which puts us at an advantage in terms of effects. As far as lighting is concerned, we want to create the effect of gloominess using CGI which will set the mood for each shot; this means lighting up shots to reflect happiness, with vibrant colours. Aswell as editing the lighting we want to use effects that play with the weather instead of waiting for the right type of weather we want for the scene. for example we can use realism to put rain in a scene or leaves blowing in the wind.

500 Word Summary

Target Audience

The band we have chosen (Feeder) aim for an audience aged 15+. their particular style is indie/rock and they get a rock fanbase and audience; we want to stick with this audience as it would be pointless to change the audience. I will have to analyse different artists of the same genre to find out what they're using in their music videos. Bands like Foo fighters and Artic Monkeys, two bands from the same genre, may use the same themes in their videos and we need to gather some ideas from these.

We will not need to aim at a specific class or socio-economic group but a video that can be enjoyed by all indie fans. we want the themes of the video to target the teenagers and young adults and have content that they would enjoy.

Textual Analysis

Having watched and analyzed our area of production (music videos), it has given us a wider perspective of what is expected of a music video and some of the elements we need to think about including in our video. We need a solid narrative to go by so the video will make sense when incorporated with the music. one thing we must avoid doing is producing a boring or directionless video.

Planning

Inspiration from Current institutions

channel 4, one of the main national TV networks broadcasts it's well know teen soap drama Hollyoaks every evening. the show is of particular interest to me because of the way it is filmed and the camera effects it uses. A lot of the shots and frames they use are based around creating different moods as it is a drama. The time of each shot as well as the frame adds to the mood they are trying to put accross, for they would use a close up of someone's face to put accross their feelings; the music also adds to the mixture to deliver the finished piece.

i want to use some of the ideas featured in the teen drama as the target audience of our video is aged 15+, with a lot of our viewers being in their late teens early twenties this would be worth considering.

AS reflection

last year whilst making our crime/thriller, i found that working in a large group of people we had clashes with filming angles and ideas. personally i found my skills lie in the filming - camera angles and editing being my favourite aspect - and the editing part of producing a piece of media.

During the production of our AS music video, i was in charge of the sound and some editing. due to lack of theoretical knowledge at that early point of the year the end product was quite basic, however the sound and mixing worked well with the video we had produced.

my weakness over was definitely organisation; this was a group problem . personally i think if i had got on top of everything i would have been a lot more productive with the theory and research side of the project.

I feel i am skilled using garageband and final cut however i would like to further develop my editing skills using final cut.

Moving onto A2 i think the biggest change will be the way i organise myself - this will be easier now i am working with only one other person. this will also mean i can get more involved with editing and filming. this also means i will have a bigger input to the research and analytical side of the project.

This year i am aiming for a A overall. i can do this by applying myself and revising before the final exam.
